entourage office x crisis dead programs

Hello, well, I probably should have seen this coming, but. . . .

After I got my new Imac in January, things worked great, but at some point in the late spring, after some OS update or security update, my Word, Excel and PP stopped loading. However, they would load if I double clicked a file, so all seemed well. Plus, Entourage worked fine.

Last week, all died. :(

I have attempted every known fix I have found (fixed permissions, ran Onyx, ran disk utility, dealt with the fonts, loaded from the test identity, etc....) and nothing. Perusing around, I now see that Office X is way past its prime.

Here's my immediate question: If I purchase Office 2004 or 2008, will an upgrade work okay? In particular, assuming the programs load fine, will the new Entourage see my old folders, rules, sigs, etc...?

I hope someone here might have a good idea on this issue. I don't think there is any other thing I can try to resurrect my programs, so while I would love one of you to have a magic bullet, I'm not looking for it.

Have you applied all the latest updates? The last update is 10.1.9; as
you've hinted at yourself, Office v.X is problematic because of its age, and
it is therefore vital to use an updated version of the application. You can
find the updater here:

<http://tinyurl.com/284v95>

If that does not work, see if removing and then reinstalling Office does the
trick. Use the Remove Office application, which you can find on your Office
CD, and when you're done uninstalling, reinstall the suite and apply the
10.1.9 update.

If that still does not work, you might want to consider upgrading to a newer
version. Both Entourage 2004 and 2008 should be able to import your v.X
database without any problems.

That depends. Entourage X Identities do not import into Entourage 2008 under
the best of circumstances. If you can get it open, then you can manually
move over your data.

I have been successful in recovering Entourage X Identities and saving the
data for Entourage 2008. If you are interested in this service, send me an

Well, I got it with the upgrade to Office 2008. Thanks for your thoughts and
ideas.

Can you explain a bit more... This makes no sense.

You do not get the old version of Office X with Office 2008. Office X is end
of life software. You do not want to run Office X if you have Office 2008.

You must purchase Office 2008. You cannot download Office 2008. Once you
have Office 2008 installed, you can download for free the updates.

Beware I also used Office 2004 without a single issue until a few days ago when word and powerpoint started crashing for no reason. Being the 'obedient' consumer I went and bought Office 2008 (several hundred $ later) since no update seemed to fix the problem.

Only to discover that on launch 2008 keeps crashing and wanting to rebuild the database...after several hours of useless attempts to have the database scanned and repaired (this utility does NOT work) I finaly found a 'fix' (see fix in other blog).

FACT: Entourage 2008 did not import Entourage 2004 properly
FACT: DB Utility is a waste of time
FIX: Drag and drop your 'original 2004' Main identity into the Office 2008 Identities folder (replace Main).

PS: Fixed my old pop accounts but I run Microsoft Exchange on Entourage 2008 and identities still unstable !!!
