Entourage only, Intel Macs, Upgrades -- confused

F

FW

I purchased a copy of Entourage designed for Mac OSX several years ago
and I love it.

I don't like Thunderbird or the Mail app in OSX.

But now I bought a new Intel Mac running Leopard. Will the version of
Entourage that I have now run on the new Mac? It's version 10.1.4.

Do I have to purchase the upgrades that have happened to Entourage since
I bought it originally?

Or just upgrade Entourage once it's on the new computer?

What's confusing is that the upgrade page just shows OFFICE, but nothing
for lone upgrades to Entourage...How do I deal with that?

Also, shat's the best way to get all of my mail and Entourage over to
the new Intel Imac?

Thanks

Hi,

answers are inline.

It should work, but make sure you update it to the latest version by
applying the 10.1.9 updater. You might run into some problems when running
Entourage v.X in Leopard; v.X was designed to work with Mac OS X 10.0 and
10.1, which means that it is completely obsolete by today's standards
Do I have to purchase the upgrades that have happened to Entourage since
I bought it originally?

No, you can download the 10.1.9 updater for free. Note however that you
cannot simply upgrade from Entourage v.X to the newer Entourage 2004. That
upgrade will cost you money.
Or just upgrade Entourage once it's on the new computer?

Just download the updater and run it. I'm not sure how it will work since
you're only updating Entourage and not the entire Office suite, but it
should work nevertheless.
What's confusing is that the upgrade page just shows OFFICE, but nothing
for lone upgrades to Entourage...How do I deal with that?

I'm not sure. Entourage v.X was the only version of Entourage released as a
standalone application. Entourage 2004 has always been part of Office 2004,
so I'm not sure which upgrade paths apply. My guess is that the upgrade to
Office 2004 should work just fine with Entourage v.X on your machine, but I
can't say for certain. I can't say either whether Microsoft can answer that
question or not, since Entourage v.X is no longer officially supported.
Also, shat's the best way to get all of my mail and Entourage over to
the new Intel Imac?

Just copy the Microsoft User Data folder inside your Documents folder to the
same location on your new Mac. And be sure to delete the Office 2004 Test
Drive that comes with your machine. Don't even launch it (unless you want to
give Office 2004 a try, that is); just delete it, or you may encounter quite
a few problems.

And, as a general recommendation: if you buy a new version of Office 2004
now (any version will do), you will get a free* upgrade to Office 2008 once
that one comes out (beginning 2008). That one will run natively on your new
Mac and will be supported till 2012 at least.

* You will need to pay a modest sum for shipping fees.

Microsoft doesn't charge for the updaters. As Michel suggested get Office
2004 now and you get a free copy of Office 2008. You can buy the Student and
Teacher's edition for around $150.

Well, if you are connected to an exchange server at work, they will be able
to provide you with a stand-alone version of entourage 2004 as your
connection client - the CAL (Client Access License) includes copies of
entourage to be used as the mac equivalent of the Outlook access client used
on windows.
