Entourage opens endless new windows at launch

My client¹s Entourage 2004 identity has developed a problem in which, upon
launch, it starts opening copies of the main window (Main Identity, Main
Identity 2, Main Identity 3, etc) and continues opening about one a second
until I force-quit. No other part of Entourage is accessible during this
process.

I have:

1. Downloaded all updates to Entourage 2004.
2. Compacted and rebuilt the database two or three times.
3. Copied the identity to a new computer and launched it there.
4. Imported the identity into Entourage 2008 and launched it there.

None of these has fixed the problem. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

It looks like some kind of problem with your Entourage preferences.

Here's what I would try:
€ Allow Entourage to open all the windows it wants. Do not Force Quit.
(You might do this while you're away from your computer for a while.)
€ Once Entourage opens all the windows, close them all. (If anyone knows a
shortcut for this, please share. Option-W, which works in some applications,
does not seem to in Entourage.)
€ Open one Main Window (using the File>New submenu or cmd-shift-opt-N).
€ Quit Entourage.
€ Relaunch Entourage.

If that doesn't work, I would try creating a New identity in Entourage and
seeing if the problem recurs there.

Known bug in Entourage 2004.

Delete the preference file, manually close each window then rebuild the
database.

~Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

Entourage 2008 now allows users to Option-click on the red close button. Did
I hear you say ³I¹m going to upgrade?²
