Entourage over data quota problem

Does nayone have a fix for the following problem:

I received a message that I was 100mb from being over quota in
Entourage. I delete after putting items in the trash, so I don't think
I should be that close to the edge. Upon getting this message I
removed 500 MB from my folders. The next day I receieved a message
that I was 50MB from being over quota. Within a day or two I could not
access Entourage as the message read I was over quota.
I have tried compacting and rebuilding but that does not help. Does
anyone have a repair for me? Please let me know.

Is this in Entourage X?

See these tips to reduce your database:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/reduce.html>

Rather than deleting just a few messages, I suggest you archive your data
older than 90 days in a second Identity. This way you will have access to
your older mail, but have a lean database to work with daily.

Thanks for replying to my question. I take a look. I'm using Entourage
2004. and As I said, when I have delted saved messages it appears as
though they haven't been removed from the data, but I can no longer
see that they are there. I regularly have taked Mboxes off for
archiving, so that's one of the reasons I'm surprised that I got this
message.

This is strange. Entourage 2004 does not have a limit....well there is one,
but it's almost impossible to reach.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with your drive. I've seen reports lately
where the Finder was reporting incorrectly on the free space. Run some
utilities on your drive.

It doesn't appear to be related to the hard drive, as it's only 1/3
full. It only is a problem with the four gig allotment for Entourage
itself. After stripping off another 100mb it still doesn't see that
I've removed it. But now have everything archived, so i think I'll
just do a fresh install.
thanks for your help and i probably will create a second identity,

AGAIN, let me say the Entourage 2004 database has no size limit. Entourage X
has a 4 GB limit.

Is this on an Exchange account? In that case, you might wish to try
deleting some messages from your Exchange account (possibly using Outlook
Web Access) to reclaim some space.

Sort your email by Size (Sent items, too) & delete or save the largest
to your desktop.
You might just have attachments that are taking up space. Move them to
your desktop..extenal drive...etc
Check Deleted Items folder. Make sure it is empty.

Diane,
You are correct, I confused myself about the versions, as my partner
got a similar warning, one time only and he has Entourage 2004. I
however do have EntourageX.
I don't know if that changes any of your thoughts on the problem.
The only reason I didn't do a re-install was a super drive problem
that I have to get repaired. After that I think I will do the re-
install

OK, let's look at your original message:

Perhaps you are not removing enough space. Since your partner has 2004, you
could see if his copy will import your Entourage X database that will not
open. Usually, when Entourage X has problems, it will not export data, but
it's worth a try. If you can open Entourage X, then you should archive your
data as MBOX files ASAP. Either prune your Entourage X database
considerably, or upgrade to Entourage 2004.

Another tidbit:

If your computer does not have enough free disk space to store both your
current database and a copy of it, an out-of-memory error occurs. For
example, if the current size of your database is 10 megabytes (MB), you will
need at least 20 MB of free disk space to rebuild the database.

Could it be low disk space is causing the error message? Just a thought to
check.

Just to be clear:

Entourage X has a "Typical rebuild" and "Advanced Rebuild"

Emptying the cache does not reduce the database size itself. The database
will be left with 'wasted' space in it every time you delete something.
However, this is not all bad, since the wasted space is used up with new
data as it is added. This way, over a period of time (assuming that you are
deleting stuff as you go) the database will probably reach an optimum size,
after which the stuff you delete is roughly equal to the stuff you add, and
no further growth takes place.

If you need to recover the wasted space on your hard disk, you will have to
do a 'Advanced Rebuild' rebuild to compact the database. This will create a
compacted version of the database without the wasted space. You will then
have to manually delete the backup copies of the original database that the
rebuild process creates AFTER you are happy the new one is OK.
