Entourage problems after copying database between iMac and Laptop

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

Though i use an iMac at home i occasionally need to take my files on the road. I've used both Chronosync and regular copying of files to transfer my entire MUD from one computer to another. It appears that if you just copy, the OLD version of Entourage fires up on the "copied to" comuter. I can fix this by switching identities (in my case to the same one...very curious). However, if the machine is connected online during the initial fire-up new emails are brought into the old data base. The only way i've found to fix this, so far, is to make sure i DELETE the entire entity file set on the target computer before i copy the files. Its a pain but seems to work. Does anyone know what or why this is going on?

If you copy your Main Identity from one computer to another it should just
overwrite the old file.

Copying files does not merge them.

When you say "the OLD version of Entourage fires up on the "copied to"
comuter" are you saying an older version of Entourage opens? Both computers
must have the same version of Office installed and they must both be updated
to the same update.

Sorry, to be more clear. both machines have the same version of Mac OS and of Entourage, namely 2008. I am trying to do a straight replacement, back and forth as i switch machines, no merge. Ironically, the copy does NOT overwrite the file. when i start Entourage, it will fire up what appears to be the last email file it used. i am forced to go to the 'switch identities' dialogue and click on the main (i've kept it at that) identity again. Then.....everything works. the glitch is if when i fire up Entourage, it pulls in any pop email into the old file before i can 'switch' i have to go through some work. Sorry this is alot, but this problem is very perplexing.
FYI and different subject, the email that was sent to me as your reply may have spam/virus. when i cliked to come back the reply post was filled with some nasty stuff. I shut down and signed on from scratch. Curious.

Do the Identities have the same name? Is the file locked? This is not an
Entourage problem, but a Finder problem.

Set Entourage to Work Offline when quit. This will stop the download
problem.

On Quit
Run AppleScript (select script) work offline.

Download script here:
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/toggle_work_offline.zip

Place the script in the Script Menu Items folder inside the Microsoft User
Data folder.

Are you saying you received an email from the forum with a reply? I have
nothing to do with that. I don't use the forum to access this newsgroup. I
use a newsreader. This really isn't a forum, but an interface to a
newsgroup.

Thanks Diane, i think that will help greatly. Also for anyone else looking at these posts, i have also changed the send/receive schedule to NOT execute on startup. That will help also. This is a very curious problem that i'm going to keep working on. its almost as if Entourage catches the Database when the machine starts and is using cache or something.
Regarding the email. Yes, sorry, didn't mean to imply it had anything to do with you. i may report to the site. I setup to have emails send when posts are received. At the bottom of the email is a link back to this Forum page. Something may be getting caught automatically on the sendout from here to the emails. just wanted to let people know.

Check your startup items folder to be sure that the Microsoft Database
daemon is not listed. It's a hidden application for Office. Here are
directions for using a thumb drive to accomplish the same thing. Note the
tip about the daemon.

I keep my Microsoft User Data folder on an external pocket firewire drive (a
large capacity USB thumb-drive will suffice if both machines have USB 2.0)
and just keep aliases to it in my Documents folder of all the machines I use
Entourage on (laptop, desktop and occasionally other machines I sit down in
front of for a few hours). Works like a charm and gives me an identical
environment on every machine.

You must quit the Microsoft Database daemon in order to eject the drive.

Please report it to the site. Recently, the spammers have found a way to log
in and spam these newsgroup through the Mactopia forum interface. They need
to know users are getting spammed in replies.

Thanks Diane, the USB/Firewire option is an extraordinary idea. i'm very inclined to try it. Regarding the spam, unfortunately i deleted the email fearing any spread. If i see this again i will forward. Thanks again for your advise!
