The first problem is to get Entourage to start up at all. I suggest you
move the Microsoft User Data folder from the Documents folder to the
Desktop, and go into ~/Library/Microsoft and delete the Entourage
Preferences file, and see if Entourage is now able to start up. m.

I agree with Matt Neuburg's recommendation. I had a similar failure one
time and fixed it by trashing the delete the Entourage
Preferences file, running the Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions.

Good luck.... please keep us posted.

If you have Entourage 2004, try launching Entourage with the Shift key
depressed to disable schedules from running automatically on launch. If
that works, it's quite possible that there is a corrupt message that's
downloading and keeping Entourage from working properly. In that case, use
webmail (or a general site like <http://www.mail2web.com/>) to access your
mail account(s) and delete any junk mail.

I agree with Matt Neuburg's recommendation. I had a similar failure one
time and fixed it by trashing the delete the Entourage
Preferences file, running the Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions.

I would recommend first trying what Mickey suggested (disable Receive All
Schedule by holding Shift key down). If it starts up OK, but you don't know
how to get to your mail server by webmail, it's possible to do so in
Entourage itself without crashing to find the culprit message: in
Tools/Accounts/Mail (POP)/[each account]. click Options tab, and check
"Allow online access". Click OK and close. In View menu, select Preview
Pane/None. Now go to the Account Name icon you'll find in your Folders list.
Select the oldest message not downloaded (if you always download messages to
that computer without leaving messages on the server, it will be the oldest
- earliest received - message in the list. otherwise the earliest one with
the jagged icon for "not downloaded"). For safety, you could drag it to your
desktop to get a text copy - if you want to look at it later, open it in
TextEdit - do NOT double-click it (it will crash Entourage again if you do).
Then delete the message from the account (server folder). Then try Tools/Run
Schedule/Send & Receive All. If it still crashes, try again, picking another
message, but the first )earliest not downloaded) message is usually the bad
one.

If holding down Shift key at launch does not prevent the crash, then remove
the preference file You may not know which that is. It's here:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Entourage.prefs.plist

(where ~/ is your user folder). Not the com.microsoft.Entourage.plist file
loose in the Preferences folder. And if that doesn't work, you could try
Matt's other suggestion of removing your Main Identity folder (you hardly
need to remove the whole MUD folder). Or just cut to the chase and rebuild
your database: hold down Option key at launch and choose Rebuild.

Sorry none of the suggestions worked for you. Mine was pretty easy if
if you follow

- Quit Entourage

- Go to your

User/Library/Preferenceces

and move the following file from the folder to the desktop. You don't
have to trash it..... just remove it before starting ENT

com.microsoft.Entourage.plist

- Restart Entourage and see if that helps. The .plist file sometimes
get hosed. Entourage will rebuild a new .plist file the next time you
close the application.

I just read Paul Berkowitz's message after sending my note and I think
he is right on the mark on what you need to do.

Thank you!!!!! paul and arkay. I threw out th
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist. Of course i didn't need to quit En
since it wouldn't start. Then i shut down and rebooted . Had to put i
ID again. Then i looked in old folder on desktop and took my identitie
out of <<user data>> and put in in new folder. So now Entourage works!
i am very happy! (unfortunately i now get doubles of every letter
hmmmm) But, I only did that to keep my junk mail rules!
But i'm so happy i don't even care.... well a little. Whaddya say no
guys? Thank you again. I can't believe this actually worked in rea
time!

I am glad to hear it worked for you. I had a similar problem one time
and trashing the .plist file worked for me.

I was probably just a case of getting its brains scrambled.

The doubles will clear up.....don't worry about them.

Happy New Year

Yes HAPPY NEW YEAR and thanks again. BTW does this mean that if I tras
MY preferences my brain will unscramble too? :) Alas, easier said tha
done
