It would have helped if you mentioned what you had tried.

Did you remove this font cache file:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)

Did you test in a new Identity?

Hi Diane,
thank you for your help.
I have removed the cache file ; but that does not improve the
situation.
I had previously updated + checked authorizations.
No test with new Identity yet : is that a new "User account" ?
I am using Exchange configurations, and not very familiar with such
settings, and being abroad I wouldn't like to test risky business !
Would this new account have the same settings as my current one ? Is
there any risk of duplication or loss of data ?

You must be missing some of the updates. This is a known issue that has
been corrected in one of the Office 2004 updates.

Yes, Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to
the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
I am using Exchange configurations,

No need to even enter account info to test this problem.

problem occurs with different account.
and I checked again updates 11.5.3 (9 dec 2008)

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Combo updaters will install on the same version as
they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update
(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1055comboupdate.html>

This has been known to fix odd problems in Office. It's safe. In fact, I
always download the combo rather than use the Software updater to download
the incremental updaters.
