Entourage Sound Notification and Photo issues

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I am running Entourage 12.1.5 on my new 2.66 GhZ Intel iMac. My OS is Mac 10.5.6. I updated from Office version 10, which is still installed on my machine. I have 2 problems:

1): All Sound notifications are turned on, but work intermittently. Once they stop working, I have to quit Entourage and restart to get them working again. Sometimes it even requires a reboot.

2): I have my preference box checked to show attached pictures in messages, but pictures often do not appear. Sometimes some pictures appear; other times none appear. This holds true for Sent AND Received mail.

I have tried working these issues through Microsoft Office for Mac Technical Support; but my helper appears clueless. She advised me to trash my preference files (Microsoft.Entourage.plist and Microsoft folder) which I did to no avail.

She then explained to me that these issues are HTML/ISP issues, which of course isn't true. Neither of theses issues appeared while I was running Entourage 10.1.6 through Rosetta. Moreover, photos in my sent mail messages should always be visible as they have never been through the internet in the first place.

I know there are some sound issues that were allegedly fixed in Entourage 12.1.5, but the fix seems inconsistent at best.

Please advise. Are there other preference files that I should be trashing? Do I have to delete Entourage 10.1.6 entirely?

Thanks

First, thanks for provided complete details.
1): All Sound notifications are turned on, but work intermittently. Once they

Sometimes it even requires a reboot.

Since the sound issue is fixed, most reports of sound problems arise from
the individual's setup. Try the following first;

First check Entourage --> Preferences "Notification". Make sure that the
appropriate sounds are checked. Click the speaker icon next to them to test
your sound setup. If you can hear sounds from other applications, but not
the Entourage sounds have a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300832

An application may have set your audio output settings too high. If that
fails and you have GarageBand, try opening and closing it.

Second, download and run the latest Apple combo. This often fixes odd
problems. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files. Combo
updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need to
roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

pdate.html>

I've had users that refuse to do this because they think it will not work,
but if you look back you'll find this fixes a wide variety of problems in
Entourage. See thread "Sounds not working" posted 1/4/09.
2): I have my preference box checked to show attached pictures in messages,
but pictures often do not appear. Sometimes some pictures appear; other times
none appear. This holds true for Sent AND Received mail.

Entourage 2008 has limitations on attachments showing up in the message
body. You'll find that .jpgs that are over 400KB will not show up. Other
file formats will but not .jpgs. I do advise users to be considerate of
recipients and try to reduce attachments. Most IPS have limits on
attachments.

My next question is what type of email is this? HTML or Plain text? Are they
added as an attachment or in the body of the message. More details on kind
and size would help.

Thanks so much Diane - a voice in the wilderness :)

I don't have an audio output setting available on my imac - it's all integrated in the monitor. I checked the sounds control panel. Also, I re-ran the combo 10.5.6 update - and it seemed to do the trick for about a day, but the sound just went out again. I went in to the Entourage notifications pane, and could not hear the sounds when I clicked on the tiny speakers. The sound did come back after a reboot. So I guess this issue isn't going away so easy.

My entourage email format is defaults to HTML. Photos are added as an attachment. The photos can be anywhere from 200k to 2 mgs each. Some photos over 400k do show up and some don't. I usually can get away with 5 mg emails. frankly don't understand why MS would want to put a limit on attachment size. Google and Yahoo boxes easily hold 100mgs.

I am disappointed to be having problems with a brand new computer and brand new software. But I appreciate your efforts.

You can change the default to plain text in Entourage preferences. Entourage
doesn't limit the attachments you send it's your ISP. Entourage limits what
shows up in a message body.

PEBKAC error (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair)

Solution: Slap palm to forehead and repeat Duh! several times. Not
recommended: throwing your computer out the window. Sometimes we need to
laugh at ourselves. :)
