Entourage spontaneously quits when I try to apply color to text

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

If I mouse all the way up to the Menu Bar to select a text color, Entourage works as advertised.

If, however, I use the color icon in the email window, Entourage spontaneously quits.

Logging out of my Mac and switching to another user, with a totally different Identity: the problem persists.

Totally deleting the entire Office suite (but keeping my Microsoft User Data folder): the problem persists.

Oh yes... About the same time as this started, Excel stopped ringing its bell every time I save a document. Other sounds in both applications remain the same.

I'd switch to Office 2008, but having ordered my upgrade late (January 2!) I'm still on the waiting list four months later.

Remove this font cache file:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/crashes.html#crash44> <----this
page has lots of help with crashes, bugs, quits etc.

If that does not fix your problem.....

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update (This update delivers several improvements for
both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
