Entourage stalls on sending - receiving OK

Three people in our office and at home are running Entourage and the same
anomaly will frequently occur - it will simply get hung up when sending
mail. You hit send, the beachball from hell spins away but nothing goes
out. It does not time out - if you try to move the email to another folder
you get a message saying it is still sending the message, and there is no
error message that says it can't connect to the server. It just hangs up.
Eventually it will send itself - sometimes 5 minutes later, sometimes hours
later. Then it will straighten out and behave for long periods of time,
sometimes months. Then it will happen again.

This has happened on two G5 iMacs and one G4 iBook - from two different
ISP's (cable and T1) and through several updates of OSX - everyone is
currently on 10.3.9. Receiving mail is no problem - just sending.

Happily there is a mail client that they can access to send things out as a
backup, however, that is time consuming not to mention annoying.

Has any one else encountered this problem, and if so, was it resolved and
how?

I only had that type of problem when the SMTP server wasn't properly
specified in the settings (port or authentication issue) or when the
network had a block on port 25. In the later case, you need to either
use their SMTP server or go through SSL (provinding your SMTP server
accepts SSL) since it uses a different port.
