Entourage Sync with Exchange Server

E

Edd Dicker

I have noticed a problem with Entourage 2004 (11.3.9 updated)
(running on Intel Mac OS X 10.4.10)

When Entourage is opened for the first time, a FULL SYNC is performed.
If I delete an item in the in box, it does what it is suppose to do.

If I log onto the Exchange Server with Outlook Web Access, the item is
still there. If I wait 5 mins and see Entourage doing the background
schedule "syncs", the item is still in OWA even when I refresh the
screen.

If I quit Entourage, the item still stays in OWA.

It is not until I re-open Entourage, it it performs the startup initial
sync does it go away to the deleted items folder.

I can also replicate this by emptying the Cache which forces and update
across the board without quitting and opening.

Where is there a setting (tried all the Schedule stuff to no avail) to
tell Entourage to do a complete Sync (Command-L does not work all the
time)?

Thanks,
Edd

After Entourage fully syncs the first time do subsequent syncs still
seem to take a long time? Are you using an Outlook Web Access (OWA)
address as your Exchange Server address?

If so, then I suggest you use the address of a back-end Exchange Server
instead. (You can only do this if your Entourage client and Exchange
Server are on the same private network.)

Hope this helps!

I'm seeing the exact same behavior on 2 fully patched Leopard boxes.
Anyone have ideas?

When I send a message from Entourage, a copy is placed in the Sent folder.
It can take 2 or 3 minutes for it to show up in the Sent Items folder in
Outlook, logged on to the same account. I've got a Send and Receive All
schedule running every minute in Entourage.

I just deleted 60 or so items from the Sent folder in Entourage. 20 minutes
later, they're all still showing in the Sent Items folder in Outlook. Not
only that, but they're also all in the Deleted Items folder, in Outlook.

Cmd-L does not help.

Is there any way to determine when a full sync will occur, or force it to
happen? As it is, I have to wait 10 minutes or more after sending anything
from Entourage before I can quit the application in order to have any
confidence it'll show up in Outlook.

This is not new to 2008, by the way. Saw the same behavior in 2004.

I've got Entourage connecting directly to the Exchange server, not through
OWA.

Even after changing the Outlook client from Cached mode to uncached mode,
the Sent Items folder still shows all the items deleted in Entourage.

This sure looks like a bug to me.

What happens if you right-click on the Sent Items folder and choose
"Synchronize Now"? This should normally update during a regular
send/receive cycle, but it likely depends on what else Entourage is
synchronizing in the background. I find that downloading new information
FROM the Exchange server is normally given priority over uploading changes
TO the Exchange server.

Also, is it possible that you're using a saved search folder in Outlook to
view your sent items? A search folder that shows all messages that are from
you would potentially still pick up the messages in the "Deleted Items"
folder if it was set to also search the trash.

If you log on through Outlook Web Access instead of your Outlook client, do
you see anything different?

I did not try "Synchronize Now". I don't want to have to tell senior
executives (or anyone else, for that matter) that they will have to do this,
either. This is something that should happen without user intervention. If
it's a timing problem, then tell me where to set whatever parameter governs
the frequency of the sync process, either in the client or on the server.
Setting the frequency in the client Schedules to 1 doesn't help.

I know unequivocally that I am not looking at a saved search folder.

I'm also seeing some odd sync behavior with Entourage 2008 and my
Exchange Server. I have duplicate entries for many appointments, and
in some cases triplicates. Also, some appointments don't show up at
all when I look for them using OWA instead of Entourage. I'd also
like to know how to force a full resync/reset of the server data.
