Entourage Unexpectedly Quits

E

Edd Conboy

When I click the "send & receive" Entourage "Unexpectedly Quits". I
had a mail message error yesterday, which I fixed by rebuilding the
database. That worked fine. Then today when I tried to retrieve
messages, the application quit. I did a rebuild and then an advanced
rebuild. I am running Entourage 10.1.4 on a PowerBook G4 (500) with OS
10.2.8. I looked through your threads and could not find this issue.
Thanks for any help with this.

I sm having the exact same problem (see post below yours)
and did as you did: Rebuilt the database typical and
advanced and still having the same problem.

The similarities in our setup are close. I wonder if that's
has anything to do with it. Odd that it would just start
happening.

I did print out some pages from the knowledgbase that
offers some other possible fixes. #823668. Not the exact
same sypmtoms, but I thought I'd give them a try later this
morning.

I just had the same problem. My internet service is fine and other mail programs allow me to send and receive. I can use send on Entourage but as soon as I try to receive, it quits.

How did you fix it? Rebuild database?

Well, I don't know how to fix it. I did both database
rebuilds and it still crashed. But after leaving it off and
coming back to it a couple hours late, it worked OK again.

Perhaps after the last Advanced Rebuild I needed to quit
the program and restart it. I don't know. Good luck!

Edd and Others having Entourage Quit issue.

Add my name to the list of "Unexpectly Quit" users in Entourage.
However, I have FOUND A WAY to restore it to working condition. I
can't make any promises, but it did the job. Facts in brief:

Running Mac OS 10.2.8 on a G4 laptop.
Version of Entourage is 10.1.4
Symtom: "Out of the blue", Entourage quits when it is sent to retreive
mail from POP email service.

Things tried first:
1) Repair permissions on boot disk using Apple Disk Utility.
2) Perform "Typical" rebuild of database in Entourage.
3) Perform "Advanced" rebuild of database in Entourage.
4) Trashed Entourage preference file.
5) Re-boot, re-boot, and re-boot again.

All were no-go on the problem but I list them here in case they were
in some way part of my solution.

Then I noticed that Entourage was quitting when it searched for emails
in only a single one of the 4 email accounts for which it was set up
to automatically go to. I could access that email account using other
email programs so I knew the email account was valid and working on
the server end.

Then I trashed the ACCOUNT ITSELF in Entourage. (After carefully
noting all the settings and passwords, etc.) After quitting Entourage
and re-starting the program, I put the "new" email account back into
Entourage and TA-DA! It's working now as it always has.

I was quite relieved to see I didn't have to re-install the app! Hope
this works for you too.

I too have been having problems with entourage crashing. All day,
whenever I open the program, it quickly crashes on me, before I have a
chance to do anything.

In truth, it has always been a fragile program, but this is
ridiculous. I am not a computer science major, so have limited
ability to repair the problem. I assume it crashes when it retrieves
mail, and since it is set to do so upon starting ... it crashes when
it starts.

How do I loop around this????
I have no idea how ot perform either a typical or an advanced rebuild
of the database.

I do find it very suspicious that all of us started having the problem on
the same day. I have had my Entourage set to check for mail on open, which
posed some problems because I could just barely get into changing schedules
before it crashed again. Finally managed to turn off all schedules, and the
problem stopped. I went into my Webmail account and deleted all 433 junk
messages (a normal occurrence), which solved the problem.

Thanks for the tips. The rebuilds did nothing. However, I went to webmail and deleted all the spam sitting at the provider. But I think the trick was deleting my account and setting it up again that did it. I am up and running.

Please see my reply in another string dated 1/8/04 8:27AM. I also see
"Leslie Nicole" found a diiferent answer that might work as well or
better than mine.

Reuilding the database is quite simple and is explained very well under
the Entourage "Help" menu. Just search for "database" or "rebuild" and
follow the instructions.

Cheerio.

Try to access your account using your ISP's web mail service. You may have a
damaged email from a spammer that is causing Entourage to fail during a send
and receive.

Be suspicious of emails with no sender or subject listed.

When I click the "send & receive" Entourage "Unexpectedly Quits".

A malformed spam message was sent to many people causing the Junk Mail
Filter to fail. The cause of this is a missing bracket within the header
information. The JMF cannot parse the information and fails.

Microsoft is aware of this situation.

Turning off the JMF after you have a crash situation, Re-downloading the
mail, deleting the bad message, and then re-enabling the filter is the
easiest workaround.
