entourage unwanted email download

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Email Client: pop Entourage keeps downloading 6000+ old email messages; I am using sbcglobal as ISP
This happens regardless of checking "delete messages from server"
Happens every sign in for past 4 dys
Please advise
