Entourage will not open

When I try to open my Entourage, part of Office X, I get a message,
ENTOURAGE CANNOT ACCESS YOUR DATA. TO ATTEMPT TO FIX THE PROBLEM,
REBUILD YOUR DATABASE. Advancing to the next step, I am given the
choice of TYPICAL REBUILD or ADVANCED REBUILD. With both of these I
get this message AN ERROR HAS OCCURED WHILE LAUNCHING (-600). More
recently the message reads AN ERROR HAS OCCURED WHILE LAUNCHING, MAIL
ERROR.

I am on a PowerMac Quad, operating in OS10.4.8. I tried operating from
the backed-up version of the application and I experience the same
problem. I tried a test drive version of Office 2004, but it wouldn't
import my contacts and saved emails. So, for the moment, I have
removed the trial version. Right now I am mostly out of business,
except I have been able to get and receive messages from my POP
server. But, without my database of contacts and saved emails, I can't
get my job done.

Looking at the suggested fix for a similar problem:
IS THE ALERTS DAEMON WHERE IT SHOULD BE, AND CAN YOU LAUNCH IT
MANUALLY? (YOU WILL SEE IT IN THE ACTIVITY MONITOR). Answer: No, I
can't find it.
IS THE DATABASE DAEMON WHERE IT SHOULD BE, AND CAN YOU LAUNCH IT
MANUALLY. (AGAIN, YOU'LL SEE IT IN THE ACTIVITY MONITOR, ETC). Answer,
it is there, but it won't launch.

Error -600

An error occurred while launching.

An unknown error (-600) occurred.

This is the standard Macintosh error procNotFound. It is usually a response
when trying to send an AppleEvent to a non-existant target (or, more
technically, when the mach port for AppleEvents for that target cannot be
found). This would usually be generated by the toolbox, but Entourage
generates that error in these cases:

(1) if Entourage cannot find the Alerts Daemon (usually found in the Office
subfolder) to launch to show the "toasts" (notifications that new mail has
been received),

(2) if Entourage is trying to open a document and cannot find the Finder
application (this is usually when you're opening Entourage on a system that
is too old, so probably not your case), and

(3) in some generic process code that tracks whether other processes (e.g.,
the Database Daemon) are running.

To Solve your problems, first test Entourage in a new User. Go to System
Preferences and create a new User. If Entourage launches there it's a
problem with your User folder preferences or your database.

If it doesn't launch in a new User, then you need to use "Remove Office"
then re-install and update.
