I can't get entourage to open. It comes up with an error message saying "entourage cannot access your data. to attempt to fix your problem rebuild your database." Prior to this error message I received a different error message saying I could not open this account with this version of Entourage. I have not done anything different except to use a new cable which is working. I don't know how to rebuild my database. It was working this morning.

I can't get entourage to open. It comes up with an error message saying
"entourage cannot access your data. to attempt to fix your problem rebuild
your database." Prior to this error message I received a different error
message saying I could not open this account with this version of Entourage. I
have not done anything different except to use a new cable which is working. I
don't know how to rebuild my database. It was working this morning.

Your errors are not jiving with the changes you describe. It's not common to
see these two errors together.

You usually see this error after doing a reinstall of Office and did not
update.

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, any Identity saved with a 12.1.0 or
later version will not open in 12.0.0 or 12.0.1. Since there was a database
format change in 12.1.0 (SP1), Entourage 12.0.0 or 12.0.1 cannot open a
database saved in the later version. Once you upgrade, the Identity will
open.

Before you do anything to your Identity, I would run the Apple combo updater
and be sure Entourage is up to date. Other possibilities are free space on
your hard drive and hardware problems like bad RAM and a bad disk sectors.

Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

How to find what version of Office you have installed:

Download this script that will show you Office version info. Note there are
different scripts for Office X, 2004 and Office 2008. It gives the version
number for each Office application, the component plugin and your OS
version. Even if ALL the Office applications aren't updated each time, the
Microsoft Component Plugin, which isn't an app, will always show the latest
update.

These updaters will fully update Office 2004:
