Entourage won't start..Please help

O

I'm trying to open Entourage and it just won't open. The "E" in the
dock bounces twice then nothing. Word opens fine. Yesterday I did a
software update.I have 10.4.8. I tried reinstalling Entourage but
still won't open. Tried opening in Safe Mode too. No luck. Have not
tried reinstalling OSX yet.
Here are the events that lead up to this--

1) Did software update.
2) Installed Powerpoint from disk to view a document. After install
"PP" would not open. Just got the warning "The application PowerPoint
shut down unexpectedly....etc, etc"
3) Installed "TonicPoint Viewer" to view PP document.
4)Tried to open Entourage. Entourage won't open.
5) Reinstalled Entourage from disk. Still won't open.
From Diane Ross, Entourage Help Page (http://
www.entourage.mvps.org/)
I have tried deleting the "plist" file and have tried the "rebuild
your database" steps. Still no luck. The "rebuild your database"
didn't work because Entourage wouldn't launch. I have also backed up
the "Microsoft user data" folder to a cd.

Someone at Apple forums suggested to run "sudo update_prebinding -
root / -force" in Terminal. I don't know what that is so I'm a little
hesitant. I'm sure it couldn't hurt but I have never dealt with
"Terminal."

I just purchased Office:MAC 2004 but have not opened it. Will
installing that take care of the problem?

If someone has any ideas, please help. I have lots of business stuff I
just can't afford to loose.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

If Entourage opens in the new user then go to Step 1. If Entourage does not
open then go to Step 2.

Step 1:

1. Check for Duplicate Microsoft Database daemon in startup items.
2. Hold shift key down when starting Entourage. This disables schedules.
3. Check for third party conflicts: Haxies can cause problems.
4. Check for a corrupt preference.

Step 2. I'm not sure why you installed pieces of Office. The actual
applications take up very little space and well....you can see the problems
that have ensued.

Run the Combo Updater from Apple. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files.

Use "Remove Office" then install all Office applications from the CD. UPDATE
before opening.

Thank you so much Diane. It looks like it's step 2 for me. If I remove
office and then reinstall will I loose all of my user data
(identities, emails etc)? Should I install Office:x or Office:2004?
And if I install 2004 can I use the Microsoft User Data files that I
have backed up?

Thanks again. Sorry for the dumb questions.

"Remove Office" does not remove your Microsoft User Data folder where you
mail is stored.

The version to install depends on what you have currently.

You can import from an older version to a newer version.
OE to Entourage 2001
OE to Entourage X or Entourage 2004
Entourage 2001 to Entourage X or Entourage 2004

You cannot import from a newer version to an older version. e.g. Entourage X
to OE or Entourage 2001 using Entourage.

You cannot import from the same version of Entourage. e.g. Entourage X to
Entourage X or Entourage 2001 to Entourage 2001. You can use the MBOX method
or the Export-Import Scripts to transfer mail from one identity to another.

If you don¹t have Office 2004, it¹s a great time to upgrade. Entourage X
will not be upgraded for the daylight saving time change and copies are
cheap now.
