One new trick with Entourage 2004 (I know you're using X) is that you can
start it up from default settings - i.e. with Send & Receive All schedule
OFF (Manual only) - by holding down the Shift key at startup - like
"Extensions Off" when starting up your Mac. That allows Entourage to launch
without crashing I situations like this. You could then turn off Preview
Pane and peruse the server looking for messages like that. (If you have POP
accounts, you'd do it by Allow Online Access in the Options page of the
account settings, then checking the server icon now appearing in the Folders
List and turn off Preview Pane. If IMAP, Exchange or Hotmail just check your
Inbox and folders affected by rules with Preview Pane turned off.) Delete
the message (which actually marks it for Deletion form the server), connect
to the server (Send & Receive All), and I think you'll be OK.

Subject: Re: Entourage x crashing on startup
The problem seems to be solved, but not by the database rebuild or
permissions repair I did, unfortunately they did not work.
However on the entourage help pages I found a post saying that there is a
strange virus in an email which forces E to quit when it tries to download
the mail.
I went to my webmail and cleared my inbox - which did include an email with
no address or subject size 665 bytes (that seemed the only rogue one, I
suppose I should have done them one by one but there you go). This appears
to have worked ... because I am writing from entourage now.
Thanks for your help and beware!
