Entourage X Notifications Muted

For some reason, all the notification sounds in Entourage X have
suddenly become muted, only for this application. All other apps and
system sounds are functioning perfectly (Mac OS X 10.4.6). The
notification preferences have not changed -- they are not set to mute.
The sounds do not even preview when selected.

An old posting* in this group identified the same problem, and a fix by
confirming that the system sound output setting is set to internal
rather than USB speakers. My problem, however, is I have no USB
speakers and no other speakers appear in the output list other than the
internal. So this fix does not apply.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
