Entourage X "Quits Unexpectedly" every time

D

I still am using Entourage X on my new MacBook Pro - I know, I know -
anyway, every time I quit, I get the dialog box that says "Entourage
has quit unexpectedly. Nothing else has been affected. Would you like
to send a report?"

Evidently it does crash rather than quit normally, because my "Empty
deleted items folder", set up for "on Quit", is not running.

Any ideas?

Thanks -

I would start by rebuilding the database...

I suspect it's crashing on something it finds when it tries to close the
database.

Eeeeewwwww.... *Now* we have a problem...

Sorry about this, this is going to get "ugly"... And it's partly my fault ‹
I should have picked up immediately on the fact that this is a new computer
with an old version of Office on it...

The next thing to do is to ensure you have all the p updates applied, right
up to the latest one (you haven't told us the versions of your software, so
I'm struggling a little here...)

First make sure you have applied ALL the Apple updates. Then you need to
apply Microsoft update 10.1.9 from the Microsoft website. I assume you
re-installed from the CD to put Office X on your new computer?

If you did, then it has no updates at all, and that's the reason it's
crashing. Apply the Microsoft update and it should come right.

If, on the other hand, you copied it across from your old computer, then
Microsoft Office and the Computer are now completely out of Synch. You
would be better off to:

1) Make a copy of your Microsoft User Data Folder (in case of acidents)

2) run the Remove Office tool (twice to make sure it gets both versions,
including the test drive) then

3) perform a drag-and-drop install of Office X from the CD, then

4) run the 10.1.9 updater.

I would perform a database rebuild again, once you get Entourage to start.
Might as well get the database as clean as possible.

Hope this helps

Right you are - typical AND advanced rebuilds failed. Now what?

Duh - yes, of course ! I had forgotten that I had done updates on the
old computer. I have 10.0.0 on the MacBook! Thanks - just when I think
I'm getting smart . . . will download and install update, rebuild,
etc. and let you know.
Once again, thanks!

OK, I downloaded the update, ran it no problem, ran cocktail
afterwards to run CRON scripts and fixed permissions, just in case.
Entourage now starts up fine and seems to work OK, but I cannot
rebuild the database - if I try to start up ENtourage holding the
option key to get the rebuild dialog, it quits. Hmmmmm.

Entourage now quits without showing the unexpected dialog, but the
empty deleted items schedule does not run, even though it says will
now delete . . . etc.

Humour me... Re-run the latest Apple combo update, then re-run the Office
10.1.9 update. I think one or more of the updates hasn't installed
properly...

OK - I reran both updates - Entourage shows 10.1.6 (expected), OS
shows 10.4.10 - Entourage opens, functions and quits normally, except
"Empty Deleted Items Folder" schedule still does not execute. My other
schedule, "10 min check" (which checks for new mail) works fine.

Delete the Empty Deleted Items schedule and re-make it. I suspect it is
pointing to a folder (Deleted items...) that no longer exists.

Internally, the schedules resolve the folder names to their "ID numbers",
which means that while you have a folder named Deleted Items, it now has a
different number because you rebuilt the database.

I hope :)

How do I delete it? Entourage doesn't want to let me.

Interesting side note - when I went into my identity folder, I could
not open it until I ran Cocktail and deleted the DS Store file from
the folder. I had this problem with some other folders that I brought
over from my old computer. Should I do that to ANY old folders? Could
that be involved somehow?
