Envelope icon in system tray - Outlook 2003

You didn't mention what operating system you have, but I've discovered under
Windows XP that the hide inactive icons option might have kicked in. Right
click on the taskbar (area between start button and time clock and select
properties. Checkbox your after is at the bottom.

Sorry, its Windows XP Pro SP2.

I have the system tray set up to display all icons.

The envelope icon will appear if new mail comes in during an automatic
send/receive, but won't when Outlook performs a send/receive on startup or if
send/receive is run manually. The KB article outlines all this but doesn't
give a reason or a solution. It implies that is is an issue rather than
something that happens by design.
