Envelope Only, Please

J

Joseph N.

[Word 2002/XP] I know I should know this, but I just cannot make
it work. I would like a Word document that contains only an
envelope. I created it from the envelope wizard, which, I know,
is probably what I should have avoided, but I have not yet made
the no. 10 envelope size template that, maddeningly, does not come
prepackaged in the program. Anyway, I now have the envelope
sitting on top of a blank "sheet." I want to delete the sheet,
but, as it is the last section break in the document, it will not
delete. I have tried unsuccessfully to move the envelope section
to the end; I must not be doing it correctly, though, because it
does not work and it should (I think). So, how do I delete the 8-
1/2x11 section and leave only the envelope?

And size 10 was certainly one of the choices in my copy of Word 2002 (this
may be a language and/or printer driver issue).

It's easier to start with a blank document and change the paper size
to #10 and then format the envelope, but since you've gotten as far
as you have, see

I would like to create an envelope to be available for printing every now and
then. I've always assumed that I had to attach it to a "blank" document in
order to save it. Is there a way to create and save for future use an envelope
alone?

Sure - create an envelope sized document using page layout. The other method
works just as well.

The drawback to creating an envelope template from scratch as opposed to
attaching an envelope to a document is that you have to have several key
pieces of information, all of which could be deduced from examining the
envelope that Word attaches to a document:

1. You'll probably have to choose Landscape orientation manually. If I
create a new Blank Document and change the paper size to Envelope #10, I get
a Portrait envelope, which would be pretty useless!

2. You'll also have to change the margins: obviously a 1.25" top margin
would not be useful. Again, you can observe what margins Word sets for an
envelope.

3. If you want to avoid a lot of manual formatting, you need to observe what
styles Word uses for the return address and delivery address, which are
Envelope Return and Envelope Address, respectively. The Envelope Address
style includes a frame that correctly positions the address on a #10
envelope; for other envelope sizes, the position of this frame will have to
be modified. You may also want to modify the style itself, which for some
reason includes a huge left indent.

4. And if you want to include a POSTNET bar code and don't want to have to
figure that out by hand, again you may be better off starting with the
envelope Word provides.

Your advice is well taken, and your explanation excellent. It is no problem
just attaching the envelope to an unused document. I really appreciate your
detailed explanation.
