Interesting.

How did you change the other things?

In the Tools | Envelopes dialog, click Font (next to return address), set
the size, and click on Default.... Say yes to the message. Does that not
work? It just worked for me (Word 2004). Be sure to OK out of the Tools |
Envelope dialog, not Cancel.

What version of Word?

Hi Daiya/Steven:

Please send full details of your Operating System and Word version. We're
on the track of this as a possible bug, but we need specific details of your
software levels, and particularly, the level of service pack you may have
applied.

Cheers

Send details here, I guess?

Word 2004 11.1.0 (040910) with service pack 1 and the autoupdate
updaters--but *not* the 1/10/05 junk mail update
Behaved in OS 10.3.6 and 10.3.8

(I feel like the last time someone posted a similar problem, I did have
difficulties--I'll try to research that and post about it).

Hi John,

After reading your post, I decided to try changing my font default size for
envelopes. I made the change from 12 pt to 11 pt, clicked Default, and
okayed my way out of the dialog. I then typed something in the address
field of the resulting envelope (correctly at 11 pt) and saved the document.

When I again opened the Tools> Envelope> Fonts dialog, the default was back
at 12 pt. I tried a second time, just to verify, with the same result. So
I guess I have the bug too.

OS X 10.3.7
Word 11.1 (040910)

From Don Freeman who showed up on the general Word groups:
He's using the same build I am and proves it isn't 10.3.7, which was the
main difference between Beth and I.

[quoting]

I'm using Word 2004 for Mac version 11.1 (part of Office 2004). There's
a number in parentheses next to the version number, 040910. The problem
cropped up while I was using Mac OS 10.3.7. The 10.3.8 upgrade came out
very recently, within the last two or three days. I have installed it,
but the problem is still there. To repeat the problem: I've always had
my envelope defaults set at 12 pt Palatino for the address and 10 pt
Palatino for the return address. Suddenly and for no apparent reason,
three or four weeks ago, the 10 pt Palatino default disappeared in
favor of 12 pt Palatino. I go in and change it manually in the Envelope
dialogue box (what you get when you click the tool on the menu bar),
and hit "Default" and "Yes" to ask the program to change my defaults,
but this does not stick. The same occurred when I tried to go through
the "Format >Style" route. There, even more weirdly, the default
*shows* as being 10 pt Palatino for my envelope return address. But
that's not what *happens."

You are probably experiencing the effect of one or both of the following...

1. There is a documented bug we're working on right now where a user cannot
set the default envelope font to 10pt. It just reverts to 12pt. All other
font settings save as default correctly.

2. There is a design problem that makes it appear as if changes to the
default have not been saved which I'll explain in a moment, but first
here's how to avoid the problem and see that the new default setting is in
fact saved:

A. Upon making a change to the envelope defaults and closing the dialog,
open a new document

B. With that new document active (i.e., in the foreground) create an
envelope via Tools, Envelopes...

Result: you'll see that the change to default is reflected both in the
envelope dialog and in the new envelope document.

As for the design problem: The reason that I'm having you open a new
document and make it active is that the envelope dialog inherits the
settings of the active document. If the active document was created prior to
making changes to the envelope defaults, then the envelope dialog will
reflect the state of the active document including its now non-default
settings. This is definitely confusing behavior, especially when you're
trying to create a new envelope document on top of an older non-envelope
document.

I'll work on getting this fixed. In the mean time, please let me know if
this is helpful, needs clarification, or if your results vary.
