Envelope template

Somehow, a maverick name and address (I think from a
lable I did many months ago) has infected my envelope
template, and it appears to the left of the address on
every envelope I try to print, so now all my nicely
printed letters go out in handwritten envelopes. Is
there any way I can re-install ONLY the envelope template
without having to re-install all of Office? I'm running
Windows XP and Office XP Pro. HELP!!

Hi, Kim,

When you say your envelope template, do you mean the thing that comes up
when you choose the Envelope Wizard from "File |New" menu? Is this address
printing in the same place as a return address would be, or is it near the
delivery address?

If you go into Tools | Letters and Mailings | Envelopes and Labels, do you
see anything in the address or return address fields?

If you go into Tools | Options | User Information, does the proper mailing
address appear in the box there?

Susan,

I use the "Envelopes and Labels" icon on the tool bar.

Tools | Letters and Mailing | Envelopes and Labels shows
the correct return address, and the address block is
blank.

Tools | Options | User Information shows the correct
return address.

The rogue information appears to the left of the regular
address, about halfway between the address block and the
left edge of the envelope and about 1-1/2 to 2 inches
below the return address, so I don't know it's there
until the envelope has printed out. Maddening!!

Hope this gives you a clue...thanks!

Interesting.

If you "omit" the return address, does the rogue information still print?
(This would likely eliminate "return address" as the culprit).

Do you see the same thing if you print labels?

Oh, also--have you tried deleting the normal.dot template to see if that
resets anything for you?

OK, Susan, this is really weird! The phantom didn't show
up when I omitted the return address, but I couldn't find
it anywhere in the "return address" block. I switched
to "label" mode, checked "Use return address," and our
default return address popped into the box. I scrolled
down about 6 "carriage returns" and there was the mystery
addressee! I never do labels using the return address,
so it never showed up before.

I deleted the mystery address from the label return
address info, and now when I print an envelope using the
return address, everything's fine! (At least, it seems
to be working right now...)

I'd be terrified to delete normal.dot, for fear I
couldn't re-install just that file and also remember how
I customized it when I changed computers more than a year
ago. Hopefully, I won't have to deal with that now.
Many, many, many thanks -- I haven't been able to print
an envelope in more than six months!

Well, very good! I'm glad we (you) could figure it out.

FYI, if you delete (or rename) the normal.dot, Word re-generates it
automatically. You would lose any customization such as toolbars, default
fonts, and so on, but it's often a very simple way to clear out things that
have gotten corrupted over the years.

Glad it's resolved--
