eps file from illustrator into Word 2002

I am trying to insert an eps file generated in Adobe illustrator into a Word
document.
I have installed the relevant filter but when I isert the file all I get is
a stream of data about 3 pages long, I must be missing something simple, can
anyone assist please?

This might be Word misinterpreting the EPS as a text file, or maybe your
method of import ends up telling Word it's a text file. Like Suzanne asked,
are you using Insert > Picture > From File? Something else?

I strongly suspect he's using Insert | File instead.
