equation box are white boxes

The equation boxes in my document appear like white rectangles and don't
display the actual equations. It seems that words thinks it's a pictures
because i can expand the boxes. However, when double clicking on it, the
equations come up and i'm able to further edit them, but they still won't be
displayed on the page when i get out of the equation editor. I've tryed to
change the view but it doesn't change a thing.
