Equation display

In Word 2007 neither equations created using Equation Editor 3 (from
documents created in Word 2003) nor equations created using the new built-in
equation editor display in either draft or page layout views. In the case of
the new built-in equation editor I can't even see the text as I'm typing it
which, as you may imagine, somewhat lessens the utility of the equation
editor. In the case of the Equation Editor 3 equations, all i see is a
black-bordered rectangle where the equation should be. In the case of
equations created using the new built-in editor I can see ... nothing. I
cannot locate any setting governing the display of the equations. What am I
doing wrong or where has Microsoft hidden the display commands?

Updated information: when I create a new blank document, I can enter an
equation using the new built-in equation editor -- and actually see what I'm
typing and what I've typed. However all of the equations are now centered on
the page.

Two followup questions
1. What might cause the equations to not display in the "old" document? Is
this some kind of "corruption" in the word file?
2. Is there any way of changing the "default" alignment of equations to
"left"?

Updated information: when I create a new blank document, I can enter an

Yes, it probably is some kind of corruption. Try copying everything
except the final paragraph mark of the old document (easier if you
click the ¶ button so you can see it) and pasting it into a new blank
document.

2. Is there any way of changing the "default" alignment of equations to
"left"?

I find that if I enter the first equation in a document, click the
down arrow in the right-hand edge of the equation box and choose
Justification > Left, then all equations I enter after that are
defaulted to the left. I don't see any way to make that first one go
to the left by default.
