Equation editor and Math Type do not work properly

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I just purchased a new Macbook Pro and installed Office 2008 on it. For reasons that are not clear, equations constructed in both Equation Editor and Math Type are invisible in Word document. When you open them in either equation editor, you can see them and edit them but they disappear in the Word document when you close the editors. My Mac desktop running the same OS and software does not have this problem, nor has any Mac I've owned over the years. The Word preferences are set properly (i.e., the Image Placeholders box is unchecked). Also the line spacing is set correctly. All settings in the software are the same on my desktop and laptop. Is this some obscure font problem? What do I do? Because of my profession, this laptop is just a paperweight if I can't work with equations.

Go to Word>Preferences>View and under Show make sure "Drawings" is checked
and "Field codes" is not.

In the View menu, make sure you are in Print Layout mode: Equations are
suppressed in various other modes.

Ensure that both OS X and Microsoft Office are fully up-to-date with the
latest updates from Apple and Microsoft (you did not give your update
numbers, so I can't tell...)

If you are correct that you are running OS 10.5 and you just purchased the
computer, go back to the store and demand a copy of OS 10.6, which they
should have provided to you. Not only is it a better OS, but Office 2008
behaves better running in it.

Cheers
