Equation Editor angle brackets <> swap >< between Mac and WinWord

If I insert (into a Mac Word 2004, or 98 doc.) an Equation Editor v3
equation that contains angle brackets ... like <x>, but <> are from the
palette, not just greater and less than symbols ... they display
reversed: >x< under WinWord200. Note, that the rough display graphic
will initially look correct on WinWord but once it is refreshed (e.g.
by printing or double clicking on the equation) the reversal occurs.

Correcting the <> brackets and saving in WinWord then returning to
either MacWord (2004, 98) and the <> are correct, even after
refreshing. But if I save again and go back to WinWord2000, the
reversal has been re-established by the Mac.

I have installed the latest 11.1.1 Word2004 update.

Wow, never seen that one before! I was able to duplicate the
problem with a document created on the Mac in Word 2004 and
opened on the PC in Word 2003. It could be that our tech support
folks have an idea; perhaps someone has reported it before. I
forwarded your message to them; thanks for reporting the problem.
