Equation Editor Creates Only Blank Space in Document

Edited equation do not appear, only a blank space where they should be.
Clicking on the space brings up the equation, but it remains invisible
in the document. We are running Word X service release 1 under OSX
10.2.8. We'd be grateful for any help. Thanks.

I don't know if equations work the same as images but check this anyway: Go
to Preferences> View and be sure "Image Placeholders" is not checked.

Also note that Word X is now up to 10.1.6 and you are way out of date.
Updaters from Mactopia.com under downloads, when you have some time.

I just checked "Image Placeholders" and it was not checked. However,
all seems to be working now. It's been a couple of days and a few
reboots since I last checked the problem; just seemed to go away.
Probably it will return at some really inopportune moment. I'll get the
latest updates and hope they will work as insurance. Thanks for your
help.
