Equation Editor Display problem

I am running office 2003, which was upgraded from at least 2 versions of
office.

When I open a document that contains some equation editor objects, they do
not display properly- i see strange characters that are definitely not the
equations. If I click on the objects, the equation editor window opens, and
then if I click elsewhere to close, the equation (mostly) appears as it
should (still a few characters not correct. This is not practical for the
documents with 100+ equations. Any suggestions how to fix this?
