Equation editor displays wrong symbols

While typing an equation in Equation Editor for Office 2004_Word, the
operator symbols won't display properly. I cannot even do simple ones for
multiplication or division. I have tried updating to Word 11.1.1 and
reinstalling the equation editor part of the application. I also enabled the
MT Extra and Symbol fonts.

If by that, you mean you've assigned these fonts to the appropriate styles,
then I need more information in order to help. These fonts being set
incorrectly is the only cause I've ever seen for your problem. Please see
