Equation Editor error

A

AlexeiM

1. Open Word 2007 document
2. Insert -> Equation
3. Type (x-(-2))^2
4. Press Space to complete formating
5. Press Enter
6. WTF!!!!

I hope there is a solution, as it is very annoying. It can also break the
docx if you save it.

Very odd. I can change parameters within that form, and get the same result
(and once it switches to draft mode, it's impossible to switch out until
pressing Ctrl+Z a couple of times). I can't seem to trigger it with
different equation forms, though. A work-around... is to press the End key
before pressing Enter. Pressing Enter while the insertion point is inside
the equation container seems to cause the problem.

Hi Alexei,

As Herb points out there are workarounds for the behavior but it may be an Autoformat as you type action that's taking hold when you
hit enter.

See what results you get by choosing any one of these options.

A. If you use Insert=>Equation and before typing use the 'Tools' launcher on the left group to bring up the Equation options and
there turn off the choice to automatically convert expressions to professional format.

B. Use Alt, T, A to bring up the Autocorrect options and in the 'Autoformat as you type' uncheck the choice to convert hyphens to
dashes.

C. Type your equation in the document then select the equation and then use Insert=>Equation to convert it to an equation object.

It does fix the error, but it also removes the pretty formating.

And that's the reason for using the Equation Editor.

Hope SP1 will fix it :)

Hi Alexei,

Which method did you use? The formatting should not have been removed using any of them.

I just reread your previous post.

I apparently missed B, as it is working perfectly.

So you were right, it was an auto format-thing that caused the problem.

And to the other solutions, you can still use the pretty formatting, but you
have to manually select it from the toolbar. I am too lazy for that, much
easier to type ^2 than finding it in the ribbon. :)

Hi Alexei,

For the 'C' choice, you can type just as you did in your post, directly in the document then select what you typed and use
Insert=>Equation to get the formatting applied).

But, no matter how you slice & dice it, the unceremonious switch to draft
view is a bug. :)

Hi Herb,

Yes, but it appears that it may be in the Intellisense part of Word rather than in the Equation editor and it's not likely to be a
cured bug this week :)

Hmmm... this is the 2nd time this week that I've seen a reproducible bug
that happens in close proximity to equations. I guess I'd have to see the
same bugs occur in the absence of an equation in the neighborhood before I'd
agree that it's not something to do with equations. In either case, I don't
expect to see the bugs cured anytime soon.
