Equation Editor in Word 2008: Blurry, Pixilated Equations?

M

Mikooster

As a student who writes a lot of equations, this is a very annoying issue for me. I don't know if there is something I need to do to fix it, but I am confused.

When I insert an equation via equation editor, it looks fine. However, if I save my document and re-open it, all my equations are pixilated like a low-res image. If I double click the equation to edit it, and then close equation editor, the equations go back to normal again - however, it gets lost again any time I exit and restart Word.

This is not a major annoyance with only a few equations, but as someone like me who has upwards of 20 equations in their paper, this is a major problem.

Is there any way to make sure Word keeps the equations clear and doesn't make them all fuzzy? It's a pain to go through every equation to make them not blurry after every time I reopen my document.

This is a confirmed bug in Word 2008. They are working on it, and will
release a fix as soon as it has been tested.

In the meantime, don't "do" anything. The equations will come right when
you get the fix.

Hope this helps

Hi,
I had this problem too. But It appears to be solved by saving in *.doc instead of *.docx. Doing this, my equations appear sharp every time I open a document.
Hope this helps,

Hi,
I'm having the same problem, except that I've got many, many equations. I wonder if MathType would do any better? I'll try saving as *.doc instead of *.docx and see if that does the trick.
Thanks,

MathType will create equations easier, but they will still be blurry in Word
2008.

It's a bug, there's a fix on the way.

Cheers

Thank you, Mr. McGhie, for the clear statement that this is a bug & fix is on the way.
I did note that this is still a bug after the 12.0.1 update, and also that saving the document in doc rather than docx format keeps the equations crisp. (Being accused of using "fuzzy math", I don't want my equations to look it...)

I don't have Word 2007 on the PC. Does the same blurry image appear and when clicked on will the equation editor function?

Hi Harley:

The 12.0.1 patch contained "one" of the fixes to Equations (PC Word 2007
equations won't open).

We are still waiting for the other ("Fuzzy Math" fix).

Cheers

Hi Stephen:

I "do" have Word 2007, so I just tested it.

1) Create an equation in Word 2008. Looks OK.

2) Save and close, then re-open. Equation looks disgusting.

3) Close and re-open in Word 2007.

Equation still looks bad.

4) Double-click equation in Word 2007.

Equation opens in Word 2007 Equation Editor.

5) Edit and make a change.

Equation edits normally and becomes crisp again.

6) Save the document and close.

7) Re-open in Word 2008. Equation remains crisp.

Hope this helps
