equation editor

I just installed Office mac 2004 student teacher edition on my brand new MacBook. I can't seem to use equation editor. Since I am a math teacher, that sucks - to say the least! Error message says somethng like - make sure it has been installed, or maybe it has been renamed etc. All I did was install. Short of using my 2nd product key to fix the problem what can I check. Find brings up no info on equation editor.

I don't think Eq Ed is automatically installed with a standard installation
of Office 2004 - it needs to be included in a custom install or added later.
You can install it now without having to use another key, but this may be a
better idea:) Go to the following site:

http://dessci.com/en/

They're the folks who create Eq Ed for MS, but you can d/l its big brother
MathType as a 30 day trial. You just might decide to spring for it, but even
if you don't the expiration of the trial will still leave you with a fully
functional & more powerful feature than Eq Ed.

Equation editor is definitely an optional install in office 2004 (which is strange given the tiny amount of space it takes up). Mathtype is a nice program in many respects but if you want to be able to collaborate with others you will then have to convince all of them to go with mathtype as well because it isn't compatable with eq. editor. Most journals support publication of documents using eq. editor, but whether or not mathtype support is available is less clear, so that could also be an issue.
