Equation not working

I can make an equation such as, this cell equals the sum
of these cells and it will work but when I change one of
the figures in the sum, the total does not alter. EG:
Entering 1000 + 1000 and given the total correctly as 2000
but if I now try to change the 1000 to a different figure,
the total does not alter. I have re-created the equation
many times, restarted the program, locked the cell etc but
it doesn't change anything. It doesn't work in any of my
existing Excel work sheets and has always previously done
so.

Check that you haven't switched calculation to Manual
(Tools/Options/Calculation, check the Automatic checkbox).

The calculation mode is set by the first workbook you open in a
session.
