Equation object: This object is corrupt or is no longer available

I had a well working .doc file written in Word 2000. I opened it in Office
XP, made small changes, added some equations. When I saved the document all
equations that was there previously became unavailable. The message says
"this object is corrupt or is no longer available". I've checked Microsoft
support and several forums and everywhere the solution is to turn Norton's
Office plugin off.

I've done it. I've unchecked the box in the Norton configuration, I've also
tried to unregister the officeav.dll ole server manually with regsvr32. I've
finally removed NAV completely, because the file still doesn't work. I mean,
the old equations don't work, but those inserted in Office XP work well.

There is no any other security or antivirus software installed on my system.

When "View field codes" is turned on, the only difference I see is that the
old ones are signed with code "Equation.2" and the new ones as "Equation.3".

Office recovery function messes the file more and more, as it converts all
Equation.2 objects into pictures. I've also tried to run Word in safe mode -
still nothing.

Stellar Word Recovery software told me, that my document is too badly
corrupted to be repaired. OpenOffice doesn't recognize those objects as
equations too.

Any solutions?
