Erase Part of a shape

Hi All,

I am new to Visio and am using version 2007 Prof. I am trying to figure out
how I can erase part of a shape? Here is an example of what i mean, I am
trying to make a drawing as if I am looking from a top perspective of a
curio cabinet that goes in the corner, I add a rectangle and size it to 3/4
in wide and lets just say 6" long and I add a second rectagle that is 3/4
wide by lets say 12" long. now where the 6" and 12" meet is at a wall so i
want to make one end of the 12" rectangle now have a 45 degree angle cut off
one end and do the same for the 6" side so then i can put the 2 pieces
together.

How do I cut the 45 degree angle off the end of the rectangle?

Thanks for the help.

OK,
1. overlap the two rectangles into the corner
2. Draw a line from the outer corner vertex to the onner corner vertex
3. Select one of the rectangles, then Shift+Select the line
4. Shape / Operations / Fragmnet
5. You will now have two shapes - you can delete the small triangle
6. Draw another line in the same place as the first
7. Repeat 3 to 5 for the other rectangle

Hi Jeff B!

You can slice and dice using Visio's Boolean operations. Try this on a scrap
shape:

1. Draw a rectangle
2. Draw your 45-degree "chamfer line"
3. Select both shapes
4. Choose: Shape > Operations > Fragment
5. Throw away the corner!

I've got an article that talks about making a parameterized shape with a
"smart chamfer" or "smart corner" that you can control via a data field, or
Custom Property. If you're up for some nitty-gritty, have a look at:

Smart Chamfer - A Corner That Doesn't Stretch

Thanks for the help David and Chris,

This is what I needed, I was able to get it to work this morning. Sorry it
took so long to get back to you. Not sure why but I was only able to get it
to work correctly if I just added the rectangle to the drawing area, if i
moved or rotated the rectagle around and then tried to do this operation it
would not work correctly? I will have to play with it some more to get a
better understanding, but atleast I was able to get it to work.

Thanks,

Jeff B.
