erasing old documents

I can't remember how to erase old documents off the list
in Word. After I click 'File' the documents I've been
working on are listed at the bottom of the menu. Even
after I've deleted the document it still shows up on the
list. I remember there was a way to make the cursor
horizontal and delete the offending documents. Help!
