Just go to Word/Preferences/General, and uncheck "Recently used files list"
and click OK. They're gone. You can then immediately go back in and turn it
on again (increasing the default 4 up to a maximum of 9) if you want. The
old file list does not return - you start over from 0. You don't even have
to quit Word to do this, just click OK button in Preferences window to turn
off, and to turn on again. At least that's how it works in Word 2004 and I'm
pretty sure it will be the same in X.
