Erratic behaviour when sorting by subject

I am running Outlook 2003 on Windows XP, with Exchange 2000 on the back end.
I am looking at the messages in my InBox and they are currently sorted by the
'Received' column. If I select a message with the subject 'A Test' and click
on the column header 'Subject', the messages are re-sorted by subject, and
the message I had selected is still selected. Now I click on 'Received' to
re-sort them by received date. All good so far.

Now I select a message with the subject 'Test 2'. Now when I click on the
column header 'Subject', I would expect the messages to be re-sorted by
subject, with the 'Test 2' message still selected. However, what happens is
the messages are re-sorted by 'Subject', but the very top message in the
window is selected. So I have to scroll down to find my 'Test 2' message. In
short, some messages are still selected after changing the sort field, others
are not and instead it is the top message that is selected.

This happens irrespective of the machine used to access the mailbox. It
affects some mailboxes but not all. If also affects mailboxes using the
Exchange 2003 back end.

One twist is that the sorting behaviour works as expected the first time you
re-sort on a different field, but not after that.

Is it possible something is affecting the PR_Normalized_Subject field on
certain messages? (I believe this is the field Outlook actually uses to
re-sort messages, having removed FW:, RE: etc.).

If I do an advanced find for all messages the sorting works fine. Even with
messages that wont sort properly in the InBox view.

So far I have reset the view, and opened Outlook with the /CleanViews
switch. Any ideas what else I could do to fix this would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks
Jason
