erratic mouse only in word

I have a Dell Inspiron Notebook with an Alps Touchpad. I use Outlook 2003.
Whenever I use Word as email editor or general letters, as well as typing in
Publisher, my mouse cursor starts jumping all over the screen and closing
windows and bringing up the start menu. However, this only happens when I am
typing text in Word and Publisher. If I'm simply in internet explorer or
another program, the mouse cursor works fine... I'm completely stumped. I've
tried disabling the touchpad and using a wireless mouse, but it still
happens. I've tried reinstalling the touchpad drivers.. no go.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Try reducing Video hardware acceleration. You will find it in Display
Properties, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshoot. Move the slider a notch or
two to the left and apply.
