Erroneous character in heading [2007]

In one particular occurence of heading 2 the heading is prepended by a
backslash. This does not show in any layout, the toc or in a
cross-reference; it does however show in the cross-reference dialog and when
I save as a pdf in the heading's bookmark! I have obviously tried re-typing
the heading in its entirety but that has had no effect. Any suggestions?

Have you tried display Hidden text (Ctrl+*) or fields (Alt+F9)?

Hi,

Yeah I had but they show nothing out of the ordinary. I forgot to mention
earlier that it didn't show in the document map either.
