I have been hunting in vain for a solution to this one as no-one is able to
agree what the cause is. Can someone here help?

I have a brand new Dell Laptop loaded with XP pro and Office 2003 Pro that I
am setting up for one of our users.

Outlook 2003 has been configured to connect to our Imail (POP3) server
whilst the laptop is connected to the LAN through any of the avvailable
connections (Docking station, Ethernet Port on L/Top or Wireless and works
perfectly. If the Laptop is connected via someon elses network using DHCP
settings I ca set up a pptp VPN connection to our network and use Outlook as
if connected normally.

We have a dial in set up that in effect allows us to be an ISP for our
remote workers. I can set up a connection on the Laptop that is perfectly
acceptable to IE and Outlook Express. Outlook has been set up to use the
modem connection to our own ISP if a network is not available and the Test
connection button in the mail options dials this up and test ok. If the
connection is set up manually and the Outlook 2003 is opened everything
works properly. Internet explorer will dial if there is no network.

However. If Outlook is opened with no connection having been already set up
and a send/receive is attempted the following error is instantaneous and no
attempt is made to dial a connection;

'pop3 servers name- Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) :
'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you
continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'

Once again, If the connection is made manually first and and then a
send/receive is attempted it works.

The knowledge base suggest that Norton products maybe the cause but these
are not present on this laptop (we use Mcafee) but that does not explain why
it will not dial but will work if a dial up connection already exists.

Can anyone explain why Outlook 2003 will not dial the connection itself.
