Adding a little to Brian's sound advice, this error is often caused by
AntiVirus applications setup to scan email. If you have such an
application, you should consider uninstalling it, then doing a custom
re-install without any email scanning features/components/modules. Sadly,
once email scanning is installed, merely disabling it is seldom sufficient
to correct the problem. One does not need email scanning anyway, it is
entirely redundant, provides absolutely no additional protection, wastes
considerable time, and usually creates all sorts of bizarre problems where
there otherwise are none.
