Error (1) occurred during action XXX. Unexpected end of file

I have an organization chart built some time ago. When I drag a box A
into another box B, I expect box A to become box B's subordinate. It
does not.

I tried to duplicate the box (Ctrl-drag) before dragging the duplicate
into a parent-to-be box. I get the error message "Error (1) occurred
during action Duplicate. Unexpected end of file." The box is not
duplicated.

I created a new page and tried to copy the whole org chart into the
new page. I get the error message "Error (1) occurred during action
Copy. Unexpected end of file."

I open a second instance of the same file and try to drag the whole
org chart from one page to another. I get the error message "Error
(1) occurred during action Drop On Page. Unexpected end of file."
Both pages have Organization Chart" set for File->PageSetup-
LayoutAndRouting->Routing->Style.

Same thing happens when I create a new org chart from scratch and try
to copy/drag the existing org chart to the new file.

Why might this happen? Any workarounds?

Thanks.

org charts are examples of visio addins where the code that supports them
may change between visio versions. Without knowing the release/version that
the original one was created in and the release/version you are trying to
create the new one in, it's pretty problematic. You often can see the
"unexpected end of file" when there is a problem with the shape(s) being
worked with.

Oops. It's Visio 2000.

Aside from the error message, why would Visio stop subordinating box A
to box B when I drag A into B? I'm running into that again with my
rebuilt org chart. It is maddening to entertain the prospect of
copying the whole thing over yet again :( .

sounds like for whatever reason, the add-in has stopped running. Have you
applied any new software to the system recently?

I haven't, but that doesn't mean that the system hasn't been altered.

A telling event is that I found that same problem with a previous org
chart, but if I start a new org chart, it behaves properly. It's only
when I've done some work on it that it stops behaving like an org
chart.

I did change some of the snap/glue options, but the misbehaviour
persists even when I change the options back to those of a brand new
org chart.

My 10/1 and 10/2 post address the same problem!!!! I too recreated a 300+ org
chart since the relationships are lost...still await an answer..

Visio 2000 is now nine years old and the Organization Solution has been
upgraded a couple of times since 2000. I have seen some odd behavior with
drawings created with older versions of Visio and have encountered issues
connecting certain shapes in this solution. It seems to occur when the
subordinate shape was not dropped quite right. In your case it sounds like
there is more going than just the inability to connect shapes. You may want
to test opening the file with 2007 (trial) to see what happens, note after
the file is converted it will not open in Visio 2000.
