I installed Office XP while still running Windows Me.
During intallation of SP1, the system crashed.
While trying to load SP1 again, I received error message
1328, "error applying patch to file
C:\Config.Msi\XXXXXX.tmp. It has probably been updated by
other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch."
I installed Windows XP and took the following steps:
1. Removed and re-installed Office XP.
2. Removed Cabinet File 51126.MAINSP1op and Windows
Installer Patch 51126.MAINSP1op
3. Downloaded SP1 again.
After several attemps, none of these steps have prevented
the installation of SP1 from failing. A peculiarity is
that the temporary file refered by the error message is
different every time.
Has anyone found a way to overcome this error message and
install Service Pack 1?
