Error 1608 Can not install Office 2000 on my new Dell with XP

Rich O'Neill

I just purchased a new desktop computer and I am trying
to load my Office 2000 Professional on it and it will not
install because of an "Error 1608" . It says "Failed to
locate a valid qualifying product on your computer". It
also says Error 1608 "Could not find a previously
installed compliant product on your system for this
product.
I don't get it, I purposelly purchased my new computer
with only "Works Suite" because I own Office 2000 Pro and
knew I could load it on my new system. Does anyone know
how or what I need to do to install this on my XP?

Thanks,

Rich

Rich:

Think about it for a minute. Office 2000 is over four years old - how on
Earth can a version of Works released only last year /possibly/ be a
qualifying product?! Microsoft's products are not retrospective - that Works
licence only qualifies you for future Office releases (if MS choose to allow
Works as a qualifier), they cannot be used as QPs for earlier Office
versions. In addtion, once you use a licence as a qualifier, then that
licence forms part of the upgrade and the two are, effectively, assimilated
into the one licence. So, unless you have the version of Works you
originally used as a QP for Office 2000 then you may not install it on your
new system. I'm afraid you're paying the price for your total lack of
research.

There's no mystery - this really is common sense. You now have four choices:

1) Find the original product you used as a qualifier and insert the disc
when prompted

2) Call Dell and explain to them hope they may be willing to sell you an
Office 2003 OEM licence

3) If they won't sell you a licence, then buy a 2003 upgrade and use your
2000 licence as a qualifier

4) Stick with Works.

uninstall old new works

Nothing needs to be installed. As I stated, if he has the qualifying product
he used, all he need do is insert the disc when prompted. That said, if that
version came preinstalled on an old system he may not have the CD and a
'recovery disc' cannot be used as a qualifier. Moreover, Dell may have
'integrated' Works into the Windows XP disc, which means that it cannot be
removed, even if he did want to.

perhaps there is a problem with works suite - they has the
qualifying product

watch the wrap

Did you not read a work I typed?! I am well aware of the qualifying
products - but a Works version that was released nearly four years after the
product it's being used as QP for cannot be a qualifier, can it?! The latest
known version at the time of Office 2000's release was (and someone correct
me if I'm wrong) was either the Works Suite 2000 or vanilla Works v2000. The
latest versions (WS 2003 and Works v7) don't qualify - due to the fact they
were released four years after the product they're being used as a qualifier
for - capiche?

Or would you like that with pictures?!
