Error 1608 (Works 7.0 to Office 2000 Professional)

JRS

Hi All,

I have just bought a new Dell PC which comes pre-loaded with Works 7.0. As I
already own a copy of Office 2000 Professional Upgrade, I am trying to
upgrade t Office.

I keep getting an error 1608 message saying that there is no qualifying
product to upgrade from, even though I know Works 7.0 is a qaulifying
product. I am asked to select a drive where the qualifying product is, but
neither C: (where Works is installed) or D: (the original Works CD ) gets
round the problem.

I have also attempted to install a Works 6.0 CD into the drive from my
previous Dell PC but get the same problem, even though it has worked on my
old PC before.

Any clues as none of the Knowledge Base articles have assisted me!

Regards

John

Thanks for your prompt reply JoAnn.

The Works 6 OEM issue makes sense to me from a licensing point of view.

However, is there any way that I can "downgrade" the Works 7 to use my
Office 2000 Professional? It makes far more sense for me to use Office at
home as I have it at work also.

Thanks

John

You are trying to "upgrade" a newer version of Works to an older version of
Office. It doesn't work that way. Works 7 is *not* a qualifying product. And
the Works 6 is an OEM version that your new computer can't run.

I honestly don't know. Since it's an OEM version, my guess would be no - but
I could be wrong.

This question is directed at anyone - Could JRS purchase the Office 2003
upgrade and use the Office XP upgrade disk as the qualifying product?
