This error is coming from your ISP.

What SMTP are you using? Is it relay or the SMTP setting for your provider?

Users have reported this error when sending to large groups. ISPs limit the
number in a group. Usual number is 50 recipients to avoid spammer misuse.
Entourage has no limit. You should contact your mail provider to ascertain
the maximum number of recipients per message and note it. You can use the
free "Split Recipients" script to send a mass e-mail in separate mailings
automatically:

Split Recipients for Entourage 2001

Split Recipients for Entourage X

Most ISPs also require you to use their SMTP address when sending.

This is a new one so I'm not sure what to suggest. If you send from your
browser to this person do they receive?

You could try monitoring the network traffic using tcpflow.

How to use TCPflow to test Send & Receive:

If you want to send me their email, I could try sending them a test message
with their permission.

I have been having this problem yesterday and today. It started in the middle of sending/receiving last night. This morning it worked fine. I have two gmail accounts that were both doing it. Then again, in the middle of answering emails it started again tonight. I've tried all the usual things to possibly correct it. Not sure why it fixed itself overnight. I am with Comcast. I am able to use gmail online to send just fine. Thoughts?

The specific error I get is: 5.5.2 Syntax error. 21sm6109003pzk.12 although it did vary a little yesterday.

Syntax error indicates that one of the email addresses may be malformed -
maybe a space in the wrong place, or a comma instead of a period.

Sometimes good things to happen. :) Probably something they did on the
server but they would never admit to.

I was having just this problem when I sent to multiple addresses: like 4-5. Now I can't send to even one. According to the above, I guess I will have to call tech support at the ISP. That's a hit or miss proposition. May have to use web based email until Monday.

My ISP told me it is Entourage. I have installed updates, etc. It was working fine for a day or two again but is now doing it again. The email address are the same as I have always used for the same people. They are people I email nearly daily so I know there have been no changes. Frustrating! Works just fine from my browser.

Download and install tcpflow. I¹ve found that just running it can clear up
odd issues.

So as it mysteriously disappeared it has slowly returned! I have tried the TCPflow test but even though I get the listening to en0 message when i send the email no script appears in the terminal regardless of whether the email is successfully sent or not. it is completely random as to whether the emails is sent or not. sometimes entourage happily send the other times it gives me the same error message as before. there is no apparent link between the address i am sending to as i have tried numerous addresses. what do you suggest?

Diane Ross

what do you suggest?

You could try testing in Apple Mail to see if the problem occurs there. Send
& Receive are the most difficult to troubleshoot since there are so many
variables involved. I¹ve found that just having tcpflow running in the
background helps.

Mine totally quit after several days of back and forth. I did not change any email addresses I was sending to. They just started working again. I am curious is the ISP is the same for all of us having the issue. I use Comcast. Do you as well?

No I'm with a different ISP. it is still going on and completely at random; it's developed a fickle mind of its own! i have tried using Apple Mail but have encountered some problems with the program but will try to go there again.
