Error 1760 message

I have Office 2000 Professional Suite. Yesterday, I was able to use it in the
morning with no problems, but in the evening it wouldn't open any of my saved
files. I also had trouble opening a blank document. The popup window said
that I had to insert the CD's to reinstall the software, but the software was
never uninstalled. The only thing that happened was that a friend used my
laptop for a powerpoint demonstration, and I think her ppt was 2007. Could
this have caused the problem? WhenI tried to get updates for the 2000 today,
it said that I did not have the required software. The icons are still on my
desktop, and I can open to blank documents and from there open saved files. I
have the product key but do not have the CD's. Is there anything I can do to
help/fix this? If I download 2007, will this get rid of the problem or
compound it? Help please!
